Johns Hopkins Computer Science prof Professor Peter Fröhlich grades his
students on a curve: the highest score on the final gets an A and
everyone else is graded accordingly.

Clever students in Fröhlich’s “Intermediate Programming”, “Computer
System Fundamentals,” and “Introduction to Programming for Scientists
and Engineers” figured out that this meant that if they all boycotted
the exam, they’d all get As.

So they organized a boycott, milling around the hall outside the class
where the exams were being sat, sternly reminding each other that if no
one sat the exam they’d all get straight As, ignoring Fröhlich’s pleas
to come and sit the exam.

Fröhlich praised his students’ solidarity: “The students learned that by
coming together, they can achieve something that individually they
could never have done. At a school that is known (perhaps unjustly) for
competitiveness I didn’t expect that reaching such an agreement was
possible.”

Ace is, quite frankly, rather relieved. Yes, he did let Uncle Ardyn talk him into becoming Emperor of Niflheim, what the fuck, but - this is officially Not His Problem™! It’s King Regis’ problem now, and yeah, he might feel - slightly guilty for dropping this heap of trouble in his bio-dad’s lap, but hallelujah! Not. His. Problem!

Ardyn, meanwhile, is incredibly proud. His nephew, in one fell swoop, essentially took over the world! Just like his various conqueror ancestors! Oh, how he takes after his thirteen-times-great grandfather! Yes, he essentially handed it over to someone else, but - unified the entire world into a single national entity! “Welcome to the family business, nephew.” He says ‘nephew’. He means ‘son’.

Bonus points if when the report is handed out to the Lucian Council at the start of the meeting where Ace is discussed. Ace is there and when some councilor starts reading the report out loud they have to take many pauses to process what exactly Ace has done.

“Assassination of an Imperial General-” Pause. -”arson of 15 Imperial bases, sabotage of Imperial military equipment. Smuggling funds for the Resistance, breaking out of jail, breaking others out of jail-” Another pause, “It says here you tried to harm the Emperor?”

“Okay, that’s a lie, the only thing I harmed was his outfit.”

“What?”

“I was thirteen and pissed off so when he came to Galahd to make sure we were oppressed enough I dumped blackberry juice all over his ugly white robes.”

Tredd and Sonitus would think Ardyn is the BEST KING EVER and be more then willing to punch anyone who says otherwise. (Ardyn LOVES his Glaives.)

They’re like a terrible, endless cycle of enabling and poor life choices. They keep escalating and being ridiculous and oh god, why.

Still better than Ardyn getting caught in a feedback loop with Axis. Tredd is dumb and Sonitus is shameless, but neither of them are so fucking bloodthirsty as Axis on a bad day.

You know, I can just see Ardyn giving all of his Glaives/close acquaintances nicknames. Selena, for instance - you’ve already had him describing her as ‘his songbird’ (might I suggest that he mixes it up with his ‘moonbird’?) I’m damn sure that he calls Cor ‘my lion’ or ‘my lionheart’, and Nyx is, much to his quiet relief, ‘my night’ or ‘my coerul’. (Nyx knows it could have been worse. It could have been much, much worse.)

If that’s the case, what are Ardyn’s nicknames for the rest of his Glaives, do you think? …for some reason, I have the mental image of him calling Crowe ‘my murder’ (as in a murder of crows).

Axis is the one that Ardyn hangs out with when he wants to slaughter someone.

There are approximately two Astrals Ace gets along with.

They are Leviathan and Ramuh, and by ‘get along’ I mean Leviathan finds Ace amusing and Ramuh and Ace ignore each other.

It’s Leviathan that tells Regis of Ace’s existence yet refuses to name a name, instead, telling him that Ace is already in the city and nothing else.

When the ceremony is over, Regis has no idea what the hell he should do.

(He makes a Statement after going over everything with Noctis, Clarus, Cor and some others. He makes a Statement telling the people that he has another son in an attempt to get Ace to come forward and Ace watches the statement from the TV on his bar and almost crushes a shot glass in his hand.

Ace… doesn’t come forward. There’s no reason for him too. So Plan B is enacted and Regis has Cor gather information on anyone related to Katrina because who else would it be.

Cor walks into Ace’s bar and calls Ace ‘’You Highness’ in front of the Glaives there and Ace’s face goes blank.)

Maybe not a World of Ruin set-up, but Ardyn crowning Ace as HIS heir? Heir to everything that is Ardyn’s to give - deamons shrink from his passage, the Scourge refuses to touch him; Ace is King of Old Lucis, of the ruins that slumber still, waiting for their master’s footsteps.

Oh that’s a lovely idea. Ace walks through ruins and can feel the magic in them, can feel the way they respond to his presence. And when Ardyn- when Ardyn is with him the ruins seem to come alive in their presence.

*whines* Imagine - sometime after Ace kneels to Ardyn to formally ask him blessing. To ask for permission to use his Uncle’s Royal Arm. Maybe not then, but the next night, or the night after that, when they are still - far, far away from the rest of humanity, when they can pretend that it’s just them, alone in the world.

Imagine Ardyn asking Ace to kneel, expression strangely serious.

Imagine Ardyn claiming him them, essentially adopting Ace. Ace kneels to him in the middle of the wilderness, not a human soul for miles, and Ardyn rests a gentle hand in his hair and takes him as his son-in-all-but-blood. As his heir. His. Ardyn will never call him son, and Ace will never call him father, but that is their relationship nonetheless, firm and irrevocable.

Ardyn draws a crown from his Armiger, an old crown, one that precedes the existence of most modern cities and sets it on Ace’s head and kisses his forehead and bids him to rise.

“You cannot imagine, nephew, how much I hate the Astrals. But if the gods, known and unknown, were ever to hear prayer from one such as I - I would wish that you were mine.”

Ace is Prince of the Forgotten, and one day he will be King of the Forgotten, and this gift, he welcomes.

Ace probably doesn’t tell Regis outright who he is. He just simply tells Regis his mother‘s name. He doesn’t claim to be the man’s son; he’s letting Regis make the decision here about whether or not he wants to claim him, Ace isn’t going to presume a damn thing of the man who’s just seen his world/kingdom shattered.

Ace, to Regis: I can probably get word to Prince Noctis that you’re safe, if you like - I know someone who knows someone who’s in that general area right now anyway. (He’s talking about Uncle Ardyn, because he knows that Uncle Ardyn will be having words with the Chocobros anyway).

Ace, to Luna: FYI, Uncle Ardyn was the one who dropped me word that this was coming - and no, I didn’t tell anyone because who the fuck would have believed me? They would have slammed me in a jail cell and interrogated me and thought I was the one threatening everyone. I organized evacuation routes and shoplifted a bunch of the historical and cultural artifacts that I know the Nifs would have plundered anyway, I stuffed about three warehouses worth of supplies and food and survival gear into the Armiger, I did my best to get people out alive - I begged Uncle Ardyn to do what he could to help, and he doesn’t love Lucis but he loves me and he did what he could. Also, you’re the sister of High Commander Ravus Nox Fleuret who pretty much led the attack and has been fighting Lucis for years, you don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to relatives you shouldn’t love and do anyway.

Nyx, Crowe, and Libertus drag Ace into a puppy-pile at the first available opportunity and hold him as he shakes, because they’re alive, they’re all alive, he wasn’t sure this was going to work, he’s been preparing for it so damn long anyway, but everyone’s alive and they made it.

Libertus: So, this is all - very familiar. We’re in a territory occupied by the Empire, we’ve just been forcibly evicted from our home -
