I made the mistake of rereading some of @sparklecryptid ‘s ‘future selves dragged back in time via runes’ ficlets while watching a FFXV GMV and this was spawned.
So, have an AU were an Ardynson Nyx - having outlived his father and Noctis and Regis, having lived to see the dawn again, who is scarred and broken but has taken his father’s place as King of the Forgotten - is dragged back in time for a short while when younger!Nyx accidentally bleeds on some hidden runes in the throne room (thinking this only works cause Nyx is connected to the land in a way that royals haven’t been in centuries).

ardynson au time travel Nyx is looking at his older self - looking at this *broken* man who has become a King - and he doesn’t need words he knows that there is only one thing that could put that look in his eyes only one lost that could hit him so hard as to break him and maybe Older!Nyx regrets not being there for his father when he died - regrets not giving the man that comfort or maybe this is a Nyx that killed his father at the mans request - and is telling his younger self to do it again because it broke him - but it helped his father and Nyx has always put his loved ones before himself everyone is confused at first and then they see the resemblance between Ulric and this older man This Older man who Regis et al recognise as a royal and then Nyx calls him ‘Your Majesty’ and they’re confused but it makes sense based on what they see of the man but they have so many questions that they want answers and they want those answers now I half wanted to make Somnus/Bahamut appear and attack Older!Nyx so he could show off his armiger maybe make it happen to younger Nyx - so they can see the Prince behind the glaive? hmmm (damn it brain - I have enough AU’s!) (hopefully I can go back to writing for Cruellest Cut now that this is outta my head)

I’M SCREAMING IN UTTER GLEE. Let alone the fact that this is well-written and so perfectly in character - my brain has been working overtime just pouring through the various implications - both of this visit, and all the avenues it could unfold into.
Because one thing I never really realized until I read through this story is that, technically, you could make a claim that Nyx is legally in line for the Throne of Insomnia. Disregarding the entire argument about whether or not the line of Somnus are technically usurpers with no real claim to the throne (potentially true, but since it’s been more then a hundred generations they’ve become established and no one really cares) - Nyx is a Lucis Caelum by blood. He has the magic, and that’s really the one truly quantifying aspect that makes a Lucis Caelum - he could be quantified as fourth in line to the Throne of Insomnia, with the line of succession reading Regis -> Noctis -> Ardyn -> Nyx.
And, more to the point - after the Long Night, after the deaths of the reigning Lucis Caelums, after the death of his father - he would be the only one left.
Nyx, the King of Solheim. Because borders mean nothing, really. Not anymore. Not after the Night, when everyone is scrambling and scratching and desperately trying everything in their power to survive. Nyx doesn’t want to be King. Desperately wants nothing more then to - then to grieve, to find some kind of healing. But they need the magic, they need a symbol, so he’s thrust on the throne in short order - and it’s Nyx, who faces the long, arduous task of building civilization up from the ashes again, of fixing - everything.
The irony is such that he wants to laugh. He does laugh, because if he doesn’t he’ll start screaming.
Current!Nyx is going to be facing so many questions. Questions that, at the moment, he really doesn’t want to answer - all he wants to do is sit with his face in his hands and try and wrap his brain around the revelation that, in one reality, he’d been thrust on the Throne and forced to rule. Forced to be a King. (He very much does not want to be a king, for all that his father had trained him to be one). But he doesn’t have time for that. He’s going to be locked in interrogation while his background file is gone over with a fine-toothed comb and his genetics are ruthlessly compared to the ruling line of Lucis Caelums, and - Nyx really wants Ardyn. Wants to know that his dad is still alive.
He promised, after all. To pass on a message from his older self to their father.
(And oh, Ardyn will be - terrified and sad and proud and despairing at the news, at the security photo Nyx manages to sneak him - because this is his son, so terribly broken, so terribly hurt, but it is his son as the King of Solheim, and some corner of Ardyn can’t help but be proud.)
They’re not going to find anything in Nyx’s genetics. As you yourself have pointed out, it’s been two thousand years - for all intents and purposes, he isn’t really related to Regis and Noctis at this point, or at least no more or less then the rest of Eos is. There are probably people who refuse to believe that he’s related to the royal family, people who kick up a stink that this Galadhian dares to claim any kind of connection, that this is obviously a trick -
Nyx, from where he’s been dragged in front of them, looks at them, and lets his eyes go golden as he calls the magic. His magic.
The sound of shattering glass is loud in the air as the Armiger - Nyx’s Armiger, the indisputable proof that he is a Lucis Caleum - shimmers into existence. And oh, but Nyx’s eyes are black and gold as he simply looks at the people across from them.
“My family split from King Regis’ almost two thousand years ago, but we kept the magic. And the name, although I have my mother’s because Galadh is matrilineal” Nyx’s eyes drift, momentarily, in the direction of the Crystal, of Bahamut’s ceaseless babble. “My father is Ardyn Lucis Caelum.”
