I’m like, half sure that half of the bastards actually used the warp beacon beads that belong to Jules, Ace, and Persephone to wind up in Insomnia because fuck the consequences that’s their sister.

And that’s how Regis et co. walk into Jules’ room to see seven people sprawled out across the room and also Ardor and Persephone crowded onto Jules bed because it’s their turn to cuddle damn it.

LOL. I can just picture Mercury wearing sunglasses and seriously considering just. Flooring it through the checkpoint, and indulging in a high-speed chase through the city, ending only when they pull up at the Citadel Medical Wing -

Jupiter: *sees expression on her face.* Mercury. No.

luxroyalty:

hamelin-born replied to your post “hamelin-born replied to your post “Fanfic trope: arranged marriage” …”

Now I’m curious! How did Ardyn sneak into the palace, and talk to Regis without having Regis scream for the guards? Or - do they meet up in Regis’ favorite coffee shop or something, the one he goes to when he’s incognito?

It’s Regis’ favourite coffee shop, the one next to a kid’s play area that he takes Noctis to, sometimes.

Regis is drinking a double espresso, or something else ridiculous after the day he’d had, while Noctis plays, unknowing the shift in his destiny - or maybe this was always meant to happen?

So when a man starts talking to him he thinks nothing of it.

(Regis has just found out his son is going to die young and horribly, let him rest and have a minutes peace.)

@luxroyalty I now cannot stop imagining Regis’ expression the first time he gets a briefing regarding the Niflheimr High Command - complete with photos thereof.

And Regis recognizes the purple-haired man with the stubble and self-amused smirk. He’s kissed said smirk before - just soft, quiet kisses, more for comfort then for passion - it’s the only time that Ardyn actually loses said smirk and just. Looks at Regis, as though the man were a puzzle he had no hope of understanding, and there’s something achingly vulnerable in his expression.

On the one hand: Niflheim’s High Chancellor has been sneaking into Insomnia, wtf? (Although he does have truly excellent taste in coffee.)

On the other hand. Has - Regis been accidentally seducing said High Chancellor over to their side? They talk. A lot. about duty and prophecy and philosophy and fate, about the ethics of morality and mortality, and Ardyn ‘Man of No Consequence’ No-Last-Name (though, to be fair, Regis ‘call me Reggie’ never gave a last name either) has look - increasingly thoughtful and has actually been conceding points to Regis during their talks.

…Regis feels very much like the heroine in those novels he absolutely has never seen Clarus read, nope. (Look, Gladio had to get it from somewhere.)

@hamelin-born

Regis covers his mouth but the “Excuse me what the fuck” expression is one for the ages. It’s a good thing that he went through the notes before the start of the briefing and no one was there to witness it.

That pretty smirk that pulls into a soft smile for a moment whenever Regis gently pulls him into a kiss. The man who kneeled on the floor and and listened to Noct as he talked about his favourite flowers. Ardyn, who just ever so slowly relaxed into this.

Regis should be worried but he wants to tighten up the gates after he gives Ardyn a pass so. So.

Regis has been knowingly seducing the Immortal Accused, and he though he couldn’t be surprised. Ardyn knew he is the King, and Regis knew he was a King, once. They know such personal stuff about each other - this seems less important that it should be. (But Regis wants to know if he can blurt it out and take Ardyn by surprise. The man would look so funny, surprised, he thinks.)

All it needed was a love-triangle for Regis’ hand. No thank you.

@luxroyalty

It’s true; in comparison, the fact that Ardyn is the actual Immortal Accursed probably outweighs the fact that he’s Niflheim’s High Chancellor. Even so, the realization draws the most fascinating expression on Regis’ face - although, after a long moment of reflection, Regis realizes that yes, he should have put the pieces together. If you both hate the Draconian and have a long-standing grudge against the Lucis Caelum line (Ardyn has never denied the fact that he is a petty, petty man who is perhaps 63% Spite at this point in time) where else would you go but the Empire?

Regis has literally been seducing this man - pretty much the Empire’s second-in-command - to his side. He IS the protagonist in one of Clarus’ books; the King of Insomnia takes a long moment to reflect on the WTF-ness that is somehow his life. Regis somehow managed to convince Ardyn to go up against the prophecy, against the Astrals with him; in comparison - well. Regis knows that convincing him to go up against the Empire probably won’t be much of a stretch.

And if he frames it in terms of how many heart attacks the Niflheimr High Chancellor making a Big Dramatic Scene of publicly defecting to the Lucian side - well. Regis likes to think he knows Ardyn well enough to know that the man will gleefully jump at the chance.

Plus, this means that Ardyn can smooch him. In public; Iedolas will probably suffer a case of spontaneous self-combustion.

No, no love-triangles for Regis’ hand. Perhaps a foursome, somewhere down the line? With a particularly deadpan Marshal and a dashing Glaive?

Ok, I’m gonna have to get into some of the details of Cor’s Crownsguard career here first, so bear with me.

I’m thinking Mors was really the only witness to what Cor did to save him, since everyone else’s attention was on the remaining attackers.  Mors keeps the knowledge of Cor’s magic close to his chest—the upper ranks of the Crownsguard know Cor has a natural talent for magic, but not what he can do, nor that he came to them already knowing how to use it, since Cor is in the habit of hiding his magic himself.

So only Mors suspects that Cor is related to the royal line.  And Cor is sent with Regis on the journey to Altissia because Mors wants an added security measure, and who better than the kid who knows more magic than Crownsguards twice his age?

Cor himself knows that he can use something he terms as ‘like the Armiger’ but doesn’t think is the Armiger, because clearly he’s not royalty, he doesn’t look a thing like them!

(When he voices this to the Chocobros 1.0 on the road after it becomes clear that yes, that is the Armiger, Clarus squints and looks between Regis and Cor.  “You kind of do, actually,” Clarus says, “In the nose and jawline.”)

And Cor tells his traveling companions upfront that ‘hey, I have a natural talent for magic, don’t be surprised if I warp and I don’t have access to the King’s Armiger because I can do something similar on my own.’

Then they get in a battle that requires an additional ranged weapon (maybe something they really don’t want to get close to, or something with a tough enough exterior that aiming for the eyes is the only way they’re gonna bring it down, but I can’t think of what at the moment) and Cor pulls a crossbow out of an Armiger of his own, ‘similar’ my ass.

When they’re finished, they have to convince Cor that yes, they’re entirely certain that was actually the Armiger and he’s probably related to the Lucis Caelums somehow.

And Cor’s making some mental connections between the stories his Ama told, his parent’s own use of magic, and how Ardyn impressed on him that he must keep the magic a secret.  So he says something along the lines of “I think my line may have branched off from the line of succession longer than a few generations ago, and we might be some sort of secret?  I don’t know, but my Ama probably does.”

That is how Weskham ends up with a ton of subscriptions to newspapers outside of Insomnia, including Niflheimr journals—they’re looking for any clue as to where Cor’s Ama might be.

They don’t find out until right before Regis’ coronation, when they’re handed a bunch of security briefings they didn’t previously have need of seeing, and the picture of Niflheim’s new chancellor makes Cor go pale.  They had been looking for the wrong surname.

Well, it’s already the Defiance ‘verse in my notes, so go ahead!

And Ardyn definitely is comparing Regis to Somnus all the time at first.  It’s part of the reason why he’s continually surprised by Regis’ kindness, even after it becomes reasonably clear that it’s just the way Regis is—Ardyn can see a few similarities between them, mostly in how they present themselves in public, and is terrified that he’ll be turned upon just as suddenly as Somnus’ cruelty was.  So the continued kindness is startling, and makes Ardyn wary at first.

But it won’t ever be seen through Ardyn’s eyes in the main fic (although I may write a few short side fics from his POV) since I’m writing just from Regis’ POV.  So if it ever gets brought up, it’ll be in a conversation Regis is either a part of or witness to.

All of them do that to some extent—the switching from typical child to adult trapped in a child’s body—but Prompto’s is the most dramatic because he is so happy and good-natured under normal circumstances (I wouldn’t say easy-going necessarily, because Salvius had just as many issues with anxiety and self-esteem as canon!Prompto, and even Ardyn’s good parenting won’t make that just vanish—mental habit is so hard to break—but he at least copes with it well).

And he will not put up with the Council trying to pull him into politics before he is ready—or any of his siblings or Ardyn for that matter.

Prompto can be very terrifying when he puts his mind to it.

Female Characters Appreciation, Villains: Part 1

“Isn’t it time to acknowledge the ugly side? I’ve grown quite weary of the spunky heroines, brave rape victims, soul-searching fashionistas that stock so many books. I particularly mourn the lack of female villains — good, potent female villains. Not ill-tempered women who scheme about landing good men and better shoes (as if we had nothing more interesting to war over), not chilly WASP mothers (emotionally distant isn’t necessarily evil), not soapy vixens (merely bitchy doesn’t qualify either). I’m talking violent, wicked women. Scary women. Don’t tell me you don’t know some. The point is, women have spent so many years girl-powering ourselves — to the point of almost parodic encouragement — we’ve left no room to acknowledge our dark side. Dark sides are important. They should be nurtured like nasty black orchids.”

“I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.”

First of all: AN UPDATE:

I HAVE MY DRIVERS LICENSE.

I am now a licensed driver. That is so huge guys. SO huge. Aaaaah.

But on the way home from the DMV in Warrenton, which is 30 miles from my house but the only place that had an appointment available: we got hit from behind because some fuckwad in front of me slammed on his brakes.

Fuck that dude, we were at the bottom of a steep hill going 55.

NOBODY was injured! WE ARE ALL FINE. Me, my driving instructor, and the two dudes behind us in the big truck. It was a fender bender, but above the bumper damage to my instructors car means that she has to get it fixed asap and we’re coordinating with her commercial insurance.

So I went and paid her for the pickup/dropoff service as well as what I had liquid in my bank account to help start covering damages. It’s not my fault, it’s not her fault, it’s just the way it is. And I felt SO bad.

So WITH THAT: I have 75$ to last me to next Friday payday. That means I don’t have enough to get to/from work, let alone to/from school :( And I have to get the car I DO have insured. And eating is gonna be canned soup but I can live with that.

Anything helps get me on the road. I need transportation money to/from work or school, or I need enough to cover the insurance and the inspection on the car I do have access to. ANYTHING helps guys.

AND A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO MY ANGELS WHO HAVE GOTTEN ME THIS FAR. I love each and every one of you and you’ve gotten me out of a shitty shitty situation and into a better one. Home stretch, I keep reminding myself that this is the home stretch.

https://www.paypal.me/theotherguysride

THANK YOU! You continue to be my angels.

Signal boosting again.

Sunday morning signal boost!

THANK YOU GUYS! But I’m at the point where I can’t afford to *get* to school this week :(

Fucknuggets.

He was a young artist employed by the Disney studio, but tasked with the entry-level job of finishing off the work of the animators and crafting the “in-between” animations that completed the characters’ movements. Wong had learned that studio executives were creating a film from the new novel, Bambi, A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten. Tom says the young artist read the book and without consulting his supervisor, “took the script and painted some visual concepts to set the mood, color and the design.”

His sketches recalled the lush mountain and forest scenes of Sung dynasty landscape paintings. His initiative paid off. Walt Disney, who was looking for something new for the film, was captivated and personally directed that Wong be promoted. Today, top animators and illustrators revere Wong’s work. Children today are as enchanted by the misty, lyrical brushstrokes of Wong’s colorful nature scenes, inspired by his training at Otis College of Art and self-study of Sung Dynasty art

Here they are! About a month before Rose City Comicon this year, I frantically thought “Shit, I need something new to sell,” and thankfully this idea has been rolling around for awhile now (though executed another way that will definitely still be happening later).

Say hello to the current Fantasy Fluffle group, a bunch of buns, ready to adventure away. Don’t worry, I’ll be getting Monk, Wizard, and Fighter done sometime soon (plus Gunslinger because I love a certain white haired disaster boy).

I’d assume it’s rather like physical energy - you can’t borrow from the future, but you can overstrain yourself. There are all those stories of people who, due to adrenaline etc, just step beyond what anyone thinks they are capable of; I’d like to think that something similar applies here.

But yes. If you push your physical capabilities too hard, you’re going to collapse. Similarly, if a Lucis Caelum pushes their magic too hard, spends it recklessly and ruthlessly, they’re going to collapse in a Very Big Way. (See: Jules’ stay in the Citadel Medical Wing.) @sparklecryptid

hamelin-born replied to your text post:

Nyx’s Mom was very, very wild. And she and Ramuh might have been very, very drunk. They made a solumn vow to NEVER speak of it again.

  Nyx DOESN’T want to know.

Also, he might also be in the same boat as Ardynson!Nyx re: hiding out from the Astrals, because noone’s quite certain as to whether or not he’d be taken for an ‘abomination’ by the rest.

(I have the headcanon that this is how the Lucis Caelum and Nox Fleuret bloodlines started - Bahamut got very, VERY drunk with his favorite priestess and one thing led to another; Shiva was lonely after Ifrit Fell and - well.)

@hamelin-born

Nyx just, does not want to know how he came to be – his mother is his mother and his father is his father and as far as he’s concerned he sprang from the earth as a fully formed baby and will never believe otherwise.

Anyone who tries to talk to him about it or who mentions his mother being pregnant with him is quickly drowned out by Nyx’s “Nonononononononononononononono…” and silenced by a stare that is both panicked and dead – people are in awe of this stare.

(Alya and Ramuh very much get that. They were way to drunk and remember nothing of that evening and they do not want to. They would never have even thought of it again if not for Nyx, and then they make a mutual agreement to just, pretend that it didn’t happen and not talk about it.

Nyx just appeared one day. Maybe he sprung forth like Athena or was left on the doorstep or something, the story changes a lot over the years. But Nyx just appeared one day. There was no pregnancy and no birth and certainly no… sex.

That is their story and they’re sticking too it)

But yeah, Nyx hides who he is as best as he can – all of Galahd knows because one, he feels like Ramuh, two, children don’t have the best control over their powers and it was pretty obvious tbh, and three, well they’re his people – from Lucis and the Astrals because there are stories about his kind.

Half-breeds, they call them. Godtouched, Astral-Childe, Abomination.

Humans aren’t fond of his kind – too much power contained in fragile mortal flesh, people who are just a bit off, who need years of experience just to be able to pass for human (and Nyx is so lucky in that. He grew up in Galahd, surrounded by his father’s people, and they taught him to be human. Any lingering oddities, when Nyx just can’t keep the mask all the way up anymore and gets tired of pretending – because he isn’t human, doesn’t want to be human, and it is so tiring to pretend all the time – get written off as him being Galahdian), weapons of mass destruction. His kind are weapons and monsters and outcasts, never trusted or loved except by a few.

And most Astrals are worse. Because these children, these God-Blessed, have the powers of their parents – even if to a lesser extent – and a connection to the world, but they are mortal. And mortals can change things.

They aren’t bound by prophecy or by the world, and they are free to make their own choices and fates. They’re Wild Cards, and the Astrals – especially Bahamut – don’t like that.

Nyx wasn’t meant to be born and he knows that, just as surely as he knows that his parents love him.

(Which, honestly, does nothing for his recklessness and suicidal tendencies)

(Also, I love that idea, that the Lucis Caelum and Nox Fleuret lines were spawned in a similar way and that most people have forgotten that. But that is why the Astrals are so cautious of them, because even generations later – when the blood is so diluted it may as well not be there – these lines still carry traces of that power, far more than any ordinary human. Bahamut and Shiva wouldn’t kill their children, but their lines stand as a warning to the other Astrals – ‘we made this mistake’ they say ‘and this is how we’ve limited it’ points at the general tragedy and prophecy that follows and binds both of those lines.

Ramuh is just like, fuck that. My kid is going to live his own life and be Happy and fuck all of you if you try to interfere)

@charlottedabookworm

This is really just - lovely. Lyrical and poetic, and I think I’m just going to type up my accumulated thoughts about this most recent verse here instead of spreading them out of the rest of the posts you’ve put up so far.

I like - I like the idea of Nyx being just. Half-human. It’s reminiscent of something I read once a Dragonlance book, where one character, who was a half-breed, was seriously questioned as to why his nickname was ‘half-elven’ and not ‘half-man’. (Paraphrased: the answer was, to humans, being half-man was to be seen as less then whole, whereas half-elven was seen as - something added extra on.) Nyx is half-human, half-Astral, and the combination is volatile and - very, very much Other occasionally. (Sometimes, Libertus looks into Nyx’s eyes and swears that his friend is literally a walking, talking thunderstorm.)

And yes. Yes, Nyx was so, so incredibly lucky. Lucky to be born, lucky to be born in the heart of his father’s power, where Ramuh could shield him from detection by the rest of the Six, lucky to be raised among people who knew what he was and didn’t care. Lucky that his father is Ramuh, who does not see his son, his son as an abomination, who loves him with the same fierce fervor that he loves all of his children - and who does not think to shackle him to a fate, a destiny.

Nyx is the Unbinder of Fate, the Breaker of Prophecies - or at least, that’s what he could grow to become. And because of that, Shiva and Bahamut would stop at nothing to destroy him, should his presence ever become known. Because Nyx - Nyx can change things. (And oh, but there are some people who are so very, very frightened of change.)

Sometimes, Nyx has to sit down for a moment when the realizations that 1) He has an aunt who is a fish 2) He has an Uncle who is a dragon 3) He has an aunt who is a walking snowman dressed like a fetish dream (put some clothes on, aunt Shiva!) crash down on him. (Uncle Titan is cool. Nyx doesn’t have anything to say about him, and he’d rather pretend that Uncle Ifrit (the petulant brat!) doesn’t exist)

And - ‘the weather of the islands depended on his moods’? …okay, now I have the mental image of Libertus just. Looking at a foggy sky and sighing, because Nyx is in a mood again, and Libertus and Pelna had better go and drag him out of his teenage angst before it starts raining. (Libertus has always cherished the times when rainbows fill the sky, because that’s when his friend is happiest.)

Also, drunk!glaives totally make fun of Nyx’s ears. They’re so pointy! (Nyx pouts).

And yes, I love Ramuh saying ‘FUCK THAT’ to the thought of trying to bind his son, trying to limit him, trying to chain him to a role and a responsibility. All Ramuh wants is for his people, for his son, to be happy - he’s a good dad. He’s enjoying being a dad.

…and just. Well. If the word got out somehow that there was an Unbinder of Fate running around Eos (I’m seeing Carbunkle doing it, for some reason, because the fuzzball means well but I don’t think he can keep his mouth shut, and perhaps he notices the influence of a Godborn on the dreamscape) - well. They don’t know who it is, and Ramuh has the best poker face of his entire existence when word begins to spread.

Very few people know what it means when Bahamut and Shiva throw temper tantrums (because Nyx may be half-Astral, but he is of age and he is mortal; by their own oaths and actions they cannot blatantly interfere with humans!). And fewer still understand their rants about Unbinders and Fatebreakers, understand what they mean. (There is a Godborn. A godborn, walking on the skin of Eos. A Third Bloodline, the Founding of something new.)

Can you imagine how desperate Regis et al would be to find a Fatebreaker? Because this - this is a way to negate the prophecy, this could be a way for Noctis to live.

And Ardyn. Ardyn knows exactly what a Fatebreaker is. And he is - curiously neutral on the subject. Ardyn has - somewhat accepted his role in the prophecy, mainly because it caries the certainty of his death. He’s not sure whether he dares hope that a godborn might shatter this destiny or curse that his death is now uncertain. He’s mainly - curious. Because, in an odd fashion, Ardyn is the closest thing to an equal, a peer, a counterpart that Nyx has - they’re both human-shaped but unmistakably Other, they’re both close descendants of an Astral bloodline (no, Ardyn isn’t Bahamut’s son, but unlike the Ruling Line of Lucis, he remembers where his bloodline came from and grew up venerating his Divine Ancestor - he’s also considerably closer to Bahamut in terms of descent then the Ruling Line is), they both know what it’s like to live in the middle of the humans and just. Not quite fit.

Why do you keep doing this to me?

Why?

But. Imagine a Nyx who looks up to his uncle nearly as much as he does his father – because that sort of loyalty is something that Nyx respects. Imagine a Nyx who is so terrified of Bahamut that he shakes – because his father has told what Bahamut had done to his Uncle, and that is Nyx’s worst fear; to be forced to kill his father, unable to do anything to stop himself, the idea terrifies him. Imagine a Nyx who places flowers at Somnus’ tomb secretly, who whispers prayers in Old Sol under his breath as he walks through the walls of the Citadel.

Imagine a Nyx who bows his head to the statues of Somnus that scatter Insomnia, who can feel the faint traces of his uncles magic emanating from the very walls around him and it comforts him as much as it sets him on edge – because, even millennia later, he can taste the iron tang of grief and the bitter regret and the sharp fear and the taint of Bahamut in magic that feels so much like Ardyn’s does, on the days when the daemons are quiet.

Imagine Nyx, learning more and more about his uncle the longer he lives in Insomnia, and struggling to reconcile this cold, broken man with the laughing and carefree and dopey brother that his father had described. Imagine a Nyx who stares at his uncles’ throne, day in and day out, and wants desperately to say something – to reveal who he is and thank the man for everything that he had done and tell him that Ardyn loved him and didn’t blame him.

(Because, once, years ago, Ardyn had told Nyx that that was his greatest regret. That Somnus had believed, even for a second, that Ardyn blamed him for Bahamut’s actions. That he went to his grave – young, too young – believing that Ardyn was dead. That he never had the chance to tell his brother that he loved him, for fear of what Bahamut would do to Somnus if he tried)

And imagine when he just can’t hide it anymore.

Maybe Nyx is pushed into a corner, maybe it’s necessary to win a fight, maybe they find out that his father is Niflheim’s Chancellor and he’s trying to correct them, or maybe he just doesn’t want to hide who he is anymore. But Nyx stands tall and straight, chin raised and eyes proud – because he has never been ashamed of who his father was, had only kept it hidden for safety and because the man himself insisted, and he wouldn’t have these people believe that he was – and he speaks his father’s name loudly and clearly.

“My father is Ardyn Lucis Caelum.” He says, golden gaze locked steadily on that of his uncles oldest surviving descendant, and then Somnus shimmers into existence between them. The room falls into silence.

For a moment, the spectral figure just stares at Nyx – and he can feel his magic trying to reach out and connect with a man who was long dead, and that hurt, because his uncle, his fathers brother, stood right in front of him but Nyx couldn’t feel him and this was so wrong – as though frozen, before he seems to swallow. “You look like him.”

There’s a wealth of loss and heartbreak and desperately clawing hope in his tone and Nyx wants to close his eyes against it, but he won’t. He can’t disrespect the man in front of him like that.

Instead, he smiles – small and sad and respectful and a little bitter but understanding all the same – and his voice is gentle when he speaks.

“Hello, Uncle. It is very, very nice to meet you.”

hamelin-born replied to your quote “A conspiracy to murder me? Why, I’m flattered!”

Ardyn is just. So perky and happy when people try and assasinate him, it really gives his would-be killers pause.

Which is half the point, of course.  The other half is that Ardyn is so, so bored all the time, and an assassination attempt is actually interesting.

@charlottedabookworm

It’s like a puzzle! He’s always intrigued with the holes in his security that his would-be killers exploit, their reasoning behind choosing this or that weapon, the sheer innovation they display in trying to end him.

(Someone get this man a rubik’s cube. Or a puzzle of an unclouded sky. Seriously.)
