“Sir Ulric-”

“Your Majesty, I know who my father is.” Nyx interrupts him, eye twitching.

“Nyx. Of course, but your birth father-”

“I know who my birth father is!”

The Lucians send him pitying looks.

Nyx resists the urge to scream.

ow

there would be. definite chaos. when/if that came out (because it might not, they might choose not to speak of it, they might keep that life - their very first together, so long ago, when they were both young and happy - to themselves) there would be so much chaos

because Aera was the first Oracle as well

and people would stand there and ask Cor how

how can he stand to serve a Lucis Caelum King, when one had killed him in another life?

helene-of-spain:

This

awed-frog:

A few fun facts about Helen, collected from various writers:

she was born of an egg, because why not

more than a thousand years after her ‘birth’, a sanctuary in Sparta still proudly displayed the shell of that egg

(obviously Pausanias travelled there to see it)

(it’s always unclear whether he had all that money to waste on tickets and bribes or if he just used a variation of Ye Olde ‘let me in for free, I’m an influencer’)

Paris was already married and abandoned his family to kidnap Helen

his first wife, a healer, refused to help him after he was wounded in battle, and that’s why he died

#karma

Helen had been kidnapped once before, when she was a child, by Theseus

he tried to ‘marry’ her but couldn’t, because she was too young, so he left her behind to go on a new adventure

meanwhile, Helen’s brothers attacked Athens, took their sister back and kidnapped Theseus’ mother just to show him

Theseus’ mother is still Helen’s personal slave years later, in Troy

also Theseus spent a few years with his ass glued to a magical chair because of an unconnected crime, so there’s that

(unpopular opinion, but he really is the vilest hero of Greek mythology)

(which doesn’t say good things about Athens but there you go)

people liked to conflate mythological and historical Sparta

or maybe they were just confused

in any case, that’s why many imagined Helen as a good athlete and fighter who trained with her brothers, in following with the Spartan tradition

Odysseus wanted very much to marry her, but after taking one look at the crowd of suitors, decided it was too much trouble

he became her friend instead, and together they devised a way for her to choose her own husband

the rejected suitors had to swear loyalty to Menelaus while standing in the blood of a horse

stallions were the holiest animals you could sacrifice

‘coincidentally’, the horse is also a symbol of Poseidon - the god of earthquakes who was a fierce supporter of the Greeks from the start

historical Troy was destroyed by an earthquake

mythological Troy was destroyed by a ‘horse’

some Helen stans insisted she was never in Troy at all - that the gods had given Paris a cloud in her image and transported her to Egypt instead

whatever the ‘truth’, Helen wasn’t happy with Paris: Aphrodite had to force her into his bed

she considered killing herself to end the war, but Priam wouldn’t let her because he liked her

Helen was also friends with Hector because everyone was friends with Hector

I’m still hoping Hector had blue hair btw, but Homer probably meant dark brown because life is unfair and we can’t have nice things

when Menelaus entered the city, he was intent on killing her, but then Helen saw him running towards her and she dropped the top half of her robe - a traditional way to beg for mercy - so he stopped in his tracks

he took her back, and they ended up having a very happy marriage

I mean all of their friends had died horribly, but who cares

you can always make new friends

#yolo

after her death, she may or may not have spent the afterlife with Achilles

there’s also something of the witch in Helen

which is consistent with the other female characters of her generation, who were all extremely strong and unGreek

this is possibly a memory of older stories and preGreek traditions

perhaps even a memory of Minoan culture - Mycenaean palaces were full of Minoans, so there was definitely some contamination there

unrelated, but this is my favourite portrait of Helen - an amphora by Euthymides showing the moment of her abduction by Theseus

i. aphrodite; sun-kissed and pink-lipped
all those hearts laid bare at your temples
was that apple spray-painted gold
worth a city, worth a girl to you?
(forgive me, i always thought
you were meant to be my protector)

ii. paris; dear, sweet paris
shepherd paris, prince paris
lover, warrior, victor, dead
was your city not worth enough
or did you measure your worth
by the beauty of the girl on your arm?

iii. odysseus; oh, i know you
all you wanted was to go home
maybe you should have considered
the viciousness of the ocean
before you promised to uphold
the honor of a girl you never loved
who never asked you anyway

iv. menelaus; so devoted, so in love
with the beauty that you married
the curls, the skin, the jewels, the silks
tell me, why did you really race
across the sea to fight ten years
in a war you so very nearly lost?
was it for the girl? or was it for
the city you sank underground?

v. tell me, o muse
why does the whole world blame
the war of sparta and of troy
on a girl whose only crime
was daring to be pretty?

you always feared god-born achilles
the most of all your fellows.
his divinity wove him taller,
better, quicker, stronger.

well here’s a secret for you:
my father was a swan,
and the monthly blood on my thighs
is two-parts ichor.

you think achilles was of impressive descent?
touch me one more time.
maybe it’s time we found out
what the daughter of the mightiest god
can do.

look to your kingdoms.
i am coming for them all.

sparklecryptid:

Cassie should not be disrespectful to a god. Let alone one that is his own father but Cassie thinks that he has somewhat of a right given that his father is telling him that he’s going to be sending Cassie to another world.

“I know you don’t like me,” Cassie says and only blinks at the hurt that crosses his father’s face, “But you could like, just kill me? There is no reason to send me to another world.”

“You’re needed there,” Apollo insists, “I swore an oath, and now it’s time for me to fulfill it.”

“By using me,” Cassie says, his voice bland as tap water.

A pause. “Yes,” Apollo says at last, “I do love you, Cassandra-” Cassie winces at the use of his full name “- But this, I cannot trust this to any other.”

“You know I’m not a healer,” Cassie warns.

“They don’t need a healer, they need balance.”

“And I’m the one to do it?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t have a choice do I?”

“You don’t,” Apollo said without remorse.

Apollo does not apologize.

Cassie doesn’t expect him to.

“When am I leaving?” Cassie says and Apollo gives him a smile that proud fathers give their children.

“Right now.”

The world goes black, and when Cassie wakes up again he’s staring up at a white ceiling.

Cassie sighs, heaves himself to his feet and freezes. He’s in a room full of children, no, full of infants, babies with something dark and terrible running in their veins.

Anger unfurls in his veins as he reaches out and feels the pain these children are in. Without thinking he approaches the sickest one, a small, frail babe and when Cassie picks up the medical chart at the end of the babes crib he sees three words:

To Be Decommissioned.

Cassie stares at the chart blankly before dropping it to a floor with a clatter and taking the babe in his arms.

He hears footsteps behind him and the sound of a gun cocking.

“Drop the weapon,” someone orders and Cassie tilts his head to the side, a cruel smile on his lips.

“No,” Cassie says pulling the illness, the miasma of darkness and night and hate from the babe in front of him. For a moment it surrounds them both, then Cassie commands it to latch onto the person behind him.

The person screams.

Cassie steps over their still twitching corpse and hushes the now crying babe.

“Now,” he says, “Let’s get out of here.”

 #SCREAMING
#Cassie thinks that Apollo hates him and that is OW (I’m also really curious as to why that is)
#also is that Prompto that he’s just found?
#actually does he save more than just the one or does he grab more? (tho he really doesn’t have the arms for that does he)
#and I am LOVING what we see of his powers
#this is so cool

[personal profile] sparklecryptid Ditto.

…I have the sudden mental image of Cassie totally saving All The Kids he can.

It’s not that remembering how she died in her last life is easy -

Her father is crying and she is afraid.  Catia has never seen him like this: wide eyes, round with terror, lips pressed tightly together as if to contain sobs.  He orders her ladies to leave, voice hoarse.  His face is wild as he walks towards her, almost staggering.  He pulls her into his arms and for a moment she feels better: whatever is wrong, he will know how to fix it.  Her father is many things to many people, but she has never doubted his love for her.

The dagger is sharp enough that Catia has time to meet his eyes, question and answer locked in the air between them, before the pain hits.

His mouth is open now, twisted into a grimace as sobs wrack his body.  He holds her tightly, calls her name, strokes a hand over her hair.  Grief is there in every motion, and the sounds of his sorrow follow her into the dark: whimpers, keens, entreaties, as if his world is crumbling in front of him.

She dies in her father’s arms, at his hand.

- it’s just that Darcy remembers some of what came after.

What came after was so much worse.
