“Project Amphitrite”—otherwise known as “Mermaids for the Military”—started attracting public attention when I was in my senior year of high school and beginning to really consider the Navy as a career option. I wanted to see the world. This new form of service promised me a world no one else had ever seen. They swore we could go back. They swore we would still be human, that every possible form of support would be offered to keep us connected to our roots. They said we’d all be fairy tales, a thousand Little Mermaids rising from the sea and walking on new legs into the future that our sacrifice had helped them to ensure.

They didn’t mention the pain. Maybe they thought we’d all see the writing on the wall, the endless gene treatments, the surgeries to cut away inconvenient bits of bone—both original issue and grown during the process of preparing our bodies for the depths—the trauma of learning to breath in when submerged, suppressing the millennia of instinct that shrieked no, no, you will drown, you will die, no.

I have posted about this story before, but not with a gripping illustration!

Read this story. If you’re seeing this, I know you’ll love it. (Like, military submarine mermaids. I’m telling you.)

“Mermaid Crowns” by Chelseas Flowercrowns

Chelsea started as a florist in Melbourne, Australia when she was a teenager and has always been passionate about nature and floristry. She then began to create flowercrowns to cover her scar on her forehead, which was a result of an incident when she was just a baby. At the time flowercrowns were just beginning to be sold in shops, however majority of other crowns lacked detail and individuality. Chelsea saw this as an opportunity to not only create crowns for herself, but for others around her who wanted something different yet beautiful.

Over time, she expanded her range to Mermaid Crowns which have taken the world by storm. Her Mermaid Crowns allow girls alike to be the mermaid they always dreamed of since being a little girl.

Follow her journey via social media, and if you would like to access your inner Ariel, purchase a crown from her shop or etsy.

Remember the Star Wars merfolk AU? Where Anakin loves making crowns for his two beloveds?

Tropical Mermaids: Aries, Taurus, Gemini

The mermaids that live amongst the warm waters that border continents. You can find them swimming among the coral reefs. They have brightly colored tails that can be extremely decorative like the aquatic life that neighbors them. Key characteristics: Cunning, materialistic, playful.

Deep-Sea Mermaids: Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn

The mermaids that live in the deepest depths of the oceans and are built for survival. They do not come up to the surface often and mostly stick to traveling with their pods. Their skin can be described as pale and have dark features to blend in with the ocean. Key characteristics: Fearless, wise, secretive.

Freshwater Mermaids: Leo, Libra, Pisces

The mermaids that live among the land and camouflage to the smaller bodies of water they call home. They can blend in with humans if they are able to shapeshift. They have darker features that are often tinted with green or brown and their tails have a murky color to them. Key characteristics: Romantic, mysterious, relaxed.

Arctic Mermaids: Cancer, Virgo, Aquarius

These mermaids live in the arctic region due to their preference for colder temperatures. The may migrate during the winter months to the tropical areas. They have lighter features in comparison to other types of mermaids and have countershading for their tails. Key characteristics: Protective, shy, curious.

→ myth figures: merfolk

A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia. The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria, in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same tradition), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans. The male equivalent of the mermaid is the merman, also a familiar figure in folklore and heraldry. Some of the attributes of mermaids may have been influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology. Historical accounts of mermaids, such as those reported by Christopher Columbus during his exploration of the Caribbean, may have been inspired by manatees and similar aquatic mammals. While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside of folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day, including 21st century examples from Israel and Zimbabwe. X
