My boyfriend won’t use the bottle opener I made, which, coincidentally, is made of pure iron. Advice?

Human: Deal.

Fey: Very well. When you return home tonight, your mother will be in pristine health again. It will be like she never fell ill at all. Even the memory of her suffering will fade…

Human: Thank you so much. She means everything to me.

Fey: I know, I know. Let’s hope the price wasn’t too much for you after all… Only time will tell.

Human: So, when do we start?

Fey: …If I may ask you to elaborate?

Human: You said you wanted my firstborn.

Fey: Yes? And you agreed?

Human: Yeah, so, when do we start?

Fey:

Fey, blushing: Ah.

Wild Hunt

A curious phenomenon and one which is hard to explain, the Wild Hunt is a combined force of Fae Ghosts and Fae Knights which once a year ride “wild”, in the sense of being free to do as they wish - to frighten, to fight, to steal away children and so on. These days even hearing of the Wild Hunt is a rarity, and even prior to the Secession of the Fae fewer and fewer Courts sent Knights. At present, with the secession still holding, it is possible it is not even held by the living any longer. Nonetheless, the stories of the Fae ghosts riding across Europe persist.

Throughout continental Europe the Hunt is limited; most ghost Fae are of a more benign kind, or at least not as energetic nor violent. In the case of the Irish Sluagh, however, the ghost-horde of Fae, their collective magic gives them a degree of tangibility, with which they may physically interact with the world to some extent, stealing people away and even killing those they cross. Likewise the ghosts of English, Scottish and Welsh Fae may sometimes join the Sluagh and hunt across the British Isles. In modern days there is little to warn when a Wild Hunt may be coming, beyond marking one’s calendar of the most likely days - autumn equinox and winter solstice - and hoping.

Though howling hounds, specifically the wild Cŵn Annwn, were once said to forewarn, without the living Fae of the Hunt to compel hounds to join the Hunt, the Sluagh and other ghosts are near-silent. Some more recent stories say that modern domestic-bred Cŵn Mamau can warn of approaching ghosts, however this is inconsistent and often unreliable. As it stands, many in the most commonly affected areas - Ireland and Wales - often utilise ancient and even pre-Roman magics to guard against wild ghosts.

It depends on if they tried to settle on earth before or not. (Not really, they are fucked either way.)

On a 1 to 10 scale of how fucked they are:

If they tried before: There are stories told through generations, of terrible beings, with no mercy or compassion. That followed arbitrary rules and claimed to never lie while deceiving everyone. They might have found out they can be kept away with iron, and particular kinds of wood.

8/10 the smart ones would have a fighting chance and probably remember enough to NOPE the fuck out.

If it’s the first time the come in contact with the Fae and are peaceful: These nice people welcomed us and invited us to a feast. 10/10 they belong to the fae now. Negotiations might be started, but you know how they have a way with words.

If it’s the first time and they don’t come with good intentions: Any and all transgressions will be met with the full wrath of Summer and Winter at their most unforgiving. Spring and Autumn will use their remains to ensure a good harvest.

15/10 The Yl’goth tried to invade the blue planet. ‘The who?’ That’s why no one goes near the blue planet anymore.

im going on the record to state that stories which position seelie-unseelie/summer-winter/etc court dynamics as inherently oppositional forces of good and evil are all written by COWARDS

face it!! you want to confine the fae to your narrow human narratives of heroes and villains to make yourself feel more secure in the face of the unknowable! its an understandable impulse but its a tired portrayal and one that doesnt do neither the writer or reader any favors!!!!

coming back to this because im in that kinda mood

summer courts being always bright and lively and symbolized by happy sunny shiny flowery things only and winter courts being dark and attached to symbols of evil/death is so so Weak

winter is a season of cold and dark but it can also be associated with the clean beauty of fresh snow, the brightness of a full winter moon on a cloudless night, preservation, sleep/restfulness, peaceful quiet, winter festivities and the coziness of coming in from the cold

summer is a light and warmth but there’s also summer storms, heatwaves/wildfires/drought as symbols of ferocity and mercilessness, the eeriness of heat mirages, abundance of insects, the sun as not only a symbol of warmth and nourishment but one of harsh unrelenting conditions

a well-made court dichotomy should allow both sides to have “good” and “bad” traits by human standards (and tbh im more in favor of both courts being equally sinister to human perception because thats how i see fae in general) and opposition between the two should never stem from the idea that one side is just “Evil”

also like can’t we just be done with light = good and dark = bad imagery in fantasy. like come on.

And don’t just flip them! Summer is ‘pretty but eeeevil’ with winter as ‘ugly but goood’ is Also Bad!

My American mother in-law sending me an email: Hey! Let’s do something, I’m going to the garden center soon, want to come?

Me: Oh cool that sounds like fun!

MIL: Yea! I want to finish making my fairy door in the garden this spring :)

Me, Scottish with Irish grandparents, shoving iron into my pockets and throwing salt everywhere: …great.

i think this is an aspect of american hospitality people with old world roots don’t get? like, it’s not that middle aged midwest american women think fairies are tiny harmless little flower babies. it’s that this is an environment chock full of possums, raccoons, coyote, pushy deer, and the occasional bear. fairies, should they show up, would have to cause a LOT of trouble to make it anywhere near the title of Apex Nuisance. once you’re late to work because a moose has has humped your trash bins into pieces, you’re not really going to be intimidated by fairy shenanigans. and their doors are SO cute….

#americans will feed the bears#no matter how many signs say not to do that#this is not a continent full of sensible people
