This is the moment when Nyx becomes the Crownforger. Or perhaps the Kingsglaive - we know what Ardyn becomes, through this ceremony and this sacrifice. But - does something equally as profound happen to Nyx, as the one who performs it?
This is the moment when Ardyn becomes the Storm King. (He’s rather expecting it to go catastrophically wrong - after all, remember what happened the /last/ time he wore/was to wear a crown? I think he’d be - flabberghasted when the ceremony is complete and he realizes that he actually IS King. The Storm King. The King of Galahd)
And Ramuh - for some reason, I see his thought process being very Nyx-like in this instance. Ramuh might think this is a /terrible/ idea. But it’s the choice that the Galahdians have made, together, and Ramuh will not gainsay them their decision. Their /free will/. The Fulgarian might destroy houses and roads and other things that displease him, but - he won’t tell them what to think or what to believe.
Re: Nyx: Nyx becomes Galahd. It’s an interesting ritual, he goes into a bit of a trance - it’s a fucking huge tattoo to draw in and all he’s got is a bamboo hammer and a rake made out of the bones of something, it’s going to take a very long time to get it done - and he channels the will of the people, their judgment of this man that would be crowned their King. And traditionally, the forger of the crown becomes also the judgment of the King. Not the one who judges at the behest of the king, but the one who judges the King himself, like the King has earned the right to judge his people. He’s got a weird eerie connection with the people, a knack for knowing what people want, which is meant to be part of what lets him judge the King and whether the King is being the kind of King the people want. (The interesting thing is that Galahd does not have a notion about a “good” King being a King that does good thing, but rather a King that gives the people the kind of life they want. It’s… complicated. Conversely a bad King would be a King who wants Galahd to stop being Galahd. Ardyn is weirdly well placed to be a good King. Which is. Yeah.)
Re: Ardyn: he’s expecting it all to go to shit and for Nyx to die and for him to wake up in a crater in the aftermath and go back to roaming the world like a pariah for another couple hundred years until he can try the whole conquer the world shtick again, just for shit and giggles. It’s been a good few years, you know, running with Galahdians again - remembering how to be Galahdian - and just… It’s been nice. Of course it’s not going to last. Nothing nice happens to Ardyn that doesn’t turn into a disaster one way or another. Admittedly, this is probably going to be the most spectacular disaster he’s gotten into in the last few centuries, so at least it’ll be memorable!
Re: Ramuh: HE’S SO INFURIATED AND ALSO SO FUCKING AMUSED, OKAY. Because on the one hand, Ardyn is a shitty asshole dripping scourge all over his islands and he wants to punt him.
On the other hand?
On the other hand, Ardyn is a good Galahdian. Like. Ramuh is keenly, annoyingly aware that the one covenant Ardyn has not burned to the ground is the one with him. The one he forged on that Walk, so long ago. Ardyn was there. Ardyn has been to every single one of them. The fucker. It’s enough that while Ramuh is certain Ardyn must be dealt with, he’ll not tolerate anyone else dealing with him. His people. His island. His problem.
And then Shiva butts in, and any willingness Ramuh had to deal with shit goes into fucking backburner because now he’s pissed and stubborn and FUCK IT, HIS PEOPLE, HIS ISLANDS, HIS MESS TO DEAL WITH.
(Ramuh had half a mind to smite them during the crown forging and then Shiva went for it and of course Ramuh went WELL NOW HE’S GETTING CROWNED WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, YOU FUCKS.)
(You can hear the Crystal vibrating with Bahamut’s rage for miles.)
I still love the idea that the only person to ever kneel to the King in the Isles is Nyx, AS the Crownforger, because he IS Galahd in that moment. It’s. Strange.
Every line is a person. Every line is a life that has bargained with the Storm and stood fearless. Nyx knows exactly how many people ARE Galahdian, and in that trance state, as he kneels, he forges those lines of loyalty.
He does not trace a single line for fealty, for foolishness, for unthinking devotion. There is no faith, there is no servitude, there is no blind obedience. The King Ardyn may be, but his people….his people do not serve him, they stand with him.
A big subtle glaring difference that makes the mainlanders boggle.
“We know no king but the King of the Storm, whose name is Ardyn.”
