Rewatching the Church scene from Castlevania, and I just - I just love this scene so much. This is a literal demon giving a corrupt churchman the Reasons You Suck speech (and trolling the ever-loving hell out of the priest; it’s seriously awesome) but it’s the implications on faith and belief that really draw my interest.
‘God is not here’ - that line gets me every time. The bishop thinks he is doing God’s work, but the fact that the demons can literally enter the church reveal that as a lie. It also implies that in other circumstances, the church might actually have posed a significant barrier/threat to the demons - that is obviously not the case in this instance.
One interpretation is that the bishop does believe, does have faith - but only in what HE believes his god to be. His interpretation of it - which may not correlate with the actual figure. I once read - I can’t remember exactly where, though I have the sneaking suspicion that it was C.S. Lewis - a line that essentially stated that ‘god is in the deed’ - meaning that no matter what you think, it is what you do, the actions that one takes, that really matter.
…when did I become interested in theology? …right, when it showed up in an animated show about demons and vampires. At any rate, I’m probably getting this wrong; please don’t kill me for my ruminating?
The theological argument that people worshipping their idea of God were idolaters was actually made as early as St Augustine (and possibly earlier, but my knowledge of the extensive body of Jewish theology is less good). The general idea is that any “God” being worshipped that was limited by human ideas was not truly God but a construct of human arrogance and vanity and therefore an idol. Gustavo Gutiérrez brings up this point in his interpretation of the book of Job when he says that the fundamental disconnect between Job and his friends is that the friends are worshipping their theology rather than God, which fails in the face of the reality of Job’s experience.
You probably don’t care that much, but thEOLOGY WAS MENTIONED AND I KNOW SOME THINGS.

Alucard turns into a freaking wolf and they glomp him. Warm, fuzzy fur!

I remember first learning that you can cry from any emotion, that emotions are chemical levels in your brain and your body is constantly trying to maintain equilibrium. so if one emotion sky rockets, that chemical becomes flagged and signals the tear duct to open as an exit to release that emotion packaged neatly within a tear. Everything made sense after learning that. That sudden stability of your emotions after crying. How crying is often accompanied by the inability to feel any other emotion in that precise moment. And it is especially beautiful knowing that it is even possible to experience so much beauty or love or happiness that your body literally can’t hold on to all of it. So what I’ve learned is that crying signifies that you are feeling as much as humanely possible and that is living to the fullest extent. So keep feeling and cry often and as much as needed
SHIT WHAT
Also let yourself cry. It really is a biochemical release valve to dump out all the chemicals that make you feel stuff.
I honestly think one reason men in western culture have so many problems is that we don’t let them cry, and literally their brains get stuffed with all this crap that doesn’t have a release valve. Men, please cry. You’ll feel better. It’s ok. You are not lesser for taking care of your health.
This is why tears from different emotions look different under an electron microscope. They’re literally made up of different things.
Happy tears are structurally different than sad tears than angry tears than overwhelmed tears etc.

-’OMG we’re alive, I can’t believe it’ bear hugs that nearly crush the life out of each other, but ‘holy shit we’re alive so I don’t care if it feels like you’re about to break my back just don’t let go!’
-Bloodied fingertips reaching up to clean away dirt from the other’s features, only to smear it across their nose or cheek, causing them both to laugh and stare at each other adoringly
-Anxiously checking each other over before the dust even settles, thanking whatever higher power exists that neither are badly wounded
-Carefully cleaning and bandaging each others wounds once they’ve made it to a safe place
-Falling asleep in each other’s arms from sheer exhaustion, as the adrenaline finally wears off on the ride home
-Finally finding each other on the battlefield, practically leaping at one another in relief, before backpedaling in discomfort from all the wounds they didn’t realize they had, only to chuckle about it and pull each other into a soft, affectionate kiss, smiling like idiots through it all because ‘dammit, we survived!’
Seriously, I just want more post-battle fluff that doesn’t automatically lead to sex. Because, let’s be realistic, there’s no way either one of them has the energy for that post-battle.
Oh my GOD I had no idea any of these were Things but I desperately need them now

Yeah. Granted, Castiel was being manipulated by Metatron at the moment, but still. Richie just makes it a point to stay as far away from all of them as possible. They do not want to ask him why, because if they did?
They would unleash the most epic the Reason You Suck Speech that ever was.

Lords of Shadow verse time travel au where Alucard wakes up in his former life as Trevor, who is about to go off and fight Dracul.
He’d hug his wife, hug his son, and tell them to GTFO. ‘Don’t tell me where. If this works, I’ll find you. If it doesn’t work - death’s not the worst thing that can happen to me. I can’t know where you are.’
And then he goes to face his dad. Only this time, he tells him flat-out that he’s his son, and that he has a wife and son, and he’d really, really like it if Dracula swore never to hurt them.

Although, watching the cutscenes again, I think he knew because there are very few ways that you could interpret that cheek touch
TBH, I thought Simon knew the first time Alucard stepped into the light during their fight against Dracula - the whole ‘No, it can’t be, NO!!!’ bit. Except then he - apparently didn’t know?

Yes, perfect.
I had a bit in mind where it was like:
“I am not here for you,” he says to Dracul and turns away.
Dracul’s stare at his back is all surprise and he laughs a little. His father has always been dramatic.
He steps closer to the mirror and draws the cross. The black spirit hovering next to him reaches out an arm.
“This is not your fate,” it says.
“I have already succumbed to my fate,” he tells it. “You have caused us nothing but misery and pain. You will not this time.”
He thrusts the cross into the mirror, sending shards flying around them. Some of them cut him and as the scent of his blood hits the air, he hears his father gasp.
It’s always about the blood.
He is Trevor Belmont. He is Trevor Belmont, not Alucard, for the first time in centuries. And yet it is both Trevor (sunwalker, cross-wielder, holy warrior) and Alucard (nightstalker, blood-drinker, the white wolf) both who turn to gaze upon Dracul, the man who had once been Gabriel Belmont.
“My mother’s name”, Alucard/Trevor lets the words fall into the sudden silence “Was Maria Belmont.” The crimson eyes of his father widen impossibly; the stretch even further as he continues. “My father was Gabriel Belmont.” He steps backwards; the broken shards of the mirror crunch beneath his boots as he holds out one bloody hand. “Would you taste the truth from my veins?”

Yes. I’m imagining that when he was younger his parents had to stop him from asking people if he could taste their blood because that’s how all vampires find their soulmates.
Trevor has to fight the urge to run away when Alucard sits up, licking his lips, and staring at him with sudden interest.

This was not crystallized by the ocean. People. No. This is why artist credit is SO DAMN IMPORTANT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE MISINFORMED HERE.
Alexis Arnold is an artist who creates crystallized books. Her work is amazing and beautiful, she’s made dozens of these.
This particular one was not made by her, however, it was actually created by Catherine McEver - who was inspired to try it after seeing a show of Alexis Arnold’s work. It’s literally the first picture on Google image results if you search for “crystallized books” and she posted about it on her blog showing other process shots as she made it.
TWO DIFFERENT WOMEN ARE BEING DEPRIVED OF CREDIT FOR THEIR CREATIVITY BECAUSE THIS FALSE INFORMATION IS BEING SPREAD. FUCK THAT.
