“I recommend,” Ardyn says, his voice like dark silk, “That you rethink using my nephew as a weapon. He is a Prince of Lucis. You would do well to remember that,” The councilor nods, shaken, and Ardyn leans back, “Besides, I think he deserves an apology, don’t you?”

Clarus tries to teach Nyx How To Shield.

Keyword, tries. Turns out Nyx doesn’t need much in the way of Learning to Shield because he’s already been doing it since he and Ace were children. Nyx thinks back to the times where Ardyn would throw fruit back at them and Nyx would wind up help Ace out of the way of the flying fruit.

Nyx, as it turns out, makes a damn good Shield.

Even when he doesn’t realize he’s being one.

Ace tries to escape, he does, expect this is Ardyn and when Ardyn puts his mind to do something it happens.

He winds up sitting there for almost two hours, around the halfway mark Nyx and Libertus show up looking for Ace. They take one look at what’s happening and leave as fast as they came. Ace is Not Impressed.

Ofc, when the Full Might Of Awkward Puberty hits the boys, Libertus and Ardyn have to watch Ace and Nyx fumble around each other and it would be funny if it wasn’t so sad watching them pining for each other.

Ardyn takes Nyx aside and gives him both a Shovel Talk and a Sex Education lesson.

Nyx can’t look at Ace for a week without blushing.

Now I’m just thinking of something happening to Nyx or Libertus and for some reason no one can get in touch with the other emergency contacts so they reluctantly dial Ardyn’s number.

Ardyn arrives an hour later. Mysteriously arriving in the hospital where Libertus or Nyx are. Meanwhile, Ace hears what happens and all color leaves his face.

He’s at the hospital, next to Ardyn, who is now talking to an Unamused Cor, in no time flat.

Nyx, Libertus, and Ace somehow try to explain that he - sort of helped raise them? Was practically the only male role model they had growing up as kids, he used to just - come around and help train us and teach us random stuff?

Ace: Also, he’s not really that heavily invested in Niflheim? I think he’s mainly chancellor just because he thinks it’s funny. I mean, for my birthday that one time, he sent me a dossier on all of Niflheim’s troop movements and upcoming operations for the next six months.

Ace: He’s sort of been one of my contacts for years.

Ardyn: Why, nephew, how mercenary of you! Taking advantage of the fact that I’m one of the few actual-blood relatives you have left in the world (aside to Cor: I’m a relative of his father’s, you see - a distant relative, but we’ve shortened it to ‘Uncle’ for convenience), taking advantage of an old man’s inexplicable fondness for his kin, just to squeeze a few scraps of advantage out of it? I’m so proud. *to Cor again*: I taught him well.
