“
and i am coming to my courage like
the winter deer to street light salt licks,
not an unbelonging as the lantern waste
—all wonder, the stuff of fairy tale—
but the production of coexistence,
the necessity of season change and cold.
never once have i stared down a lake
and found destiny staring me back,
sword in her hand and a kingdom dawning.
there is only this: the snow on the ground
and the long frozen night and waking,
greeting the morning on foal legs, shivering.
this is desperation or resignation or hope.
the sun’s path does not turn at my touch
—regardless, i am making it through.
maybe it is only chance circumstance,
my brow unadorned, and yet—well.
i might not be valiant, but i am here.
