I think there’s actually a very good reason why Grindelwald never tried to contact the twins via mail and always ambushed them wearing another person’s face. It’s called mail wards - and I’m not sure, but I think they might actually be canon. Either way, there has to be some method of filtering the letters that one receives - case in point, Harry. There is no doubt that quite a few wizards tried to send him letters etc throughout his childhood - he was the most famous person in magical England, and real-life celebrities get how much fan mail per day? And yet he never received any of it.
It is my opinion that Albus Dumbledore of the three middle names set his personal mail wards to shred anything sent by Gellert Grindelwald. His children and the rest of their extended family followed his example as soon as it was a reasonable option - hence, Grindelwald being forced to stalk them in person.
