JEDI TEMPLE CHALLENGE | EPISODE 1
Jedi Jabe Rann wasn’t an artist, but he loved watching Master Wishan sculpt dark red clay using the Force. Wishan, red-eyed, green-skinned Duros, could make anything. 10 legged scaly dragons, giant towers, a replica Jedi Temple. He even sculpted a statue of Rann complete with a lightsaber no bigger than a toothpick. The statues were a 72nd birthday present for the Jedi Temple’s librarian.
Wishan used the Force to gently lay down both pieces of the finished Jabe Rann sculpture to dry. “You try”, Wishan instructed, motioning to six lumps of clay. Well, maybe seven. Wishan had gained a bit of weight over the summer. No big deal.
Rann reluctantly reached out to the Force, lifting the clay in the air and attempting to shape it. But no matter how hard he tried, every sculpture looked like frog-dogs with bones in their mouths. Wishan wasn’t the best-looking guy, but these sculptures were just hideous.
Just then, a young Padawan peeked behind the corner, trying to steal one of Wishan’s drying figures. Rann closed his eyes and focused on the clay. He knew that if all he could make were monsters, then he had better make a terrifying one. Using the Force Rann, felt the clay forming beneath his fingers. The Padawan screamed as a giant dragon skeleton now loomed over him.
Seconds after the Padawan ran away, Rann broke concentration and the clay sculpture splattered into 12 pieces. Wishan laughed and smiled. “You might not be a great artist, but at least you can keep my sculptures safe. Now, let’s head out together for a big dinner to celebrate. I’m already seven lumps of clay. Why not eight or nine?”
It’s hard to tell if Jedi Temple Challenge meant for these in-show stories to be considered canon or not (the canonicity hasn’t been stated on either way) but I loved this story about Jedi using the Force for their art, which instantly reminded me of a bit from Dooku: Jedi Lost (which is canon):
DOOKU: (HOLO-NARRATION)
I lifted everything I could around us. Stones. Leaves. Blossoms. I even lifted some of the soil from the roots of the Great Tree, molding it as we were taught in Master Veleckra’s Force-sculpture lesson; a perfect icosahedron, fashioned out of dirt. Do you know how difficult that is?
I love that the Jedi use the Force in their art, that the Jedi Temple has art classes, which makes sense because it’s hard to throw a rock in the Jedi Temple without hitting some form of artistry, whether statues or sculptures or murals or more.
(Mural from the Jedi Temple Archives)
I love the idea that there are probably Jedi who dedicate their entire careers to being artists, so well known that their creations are prized, that they can create massive, towering art sculptures or ones that are as tiny as a toothpick, all shaped and molded with the Force.
