dospunk:

It’s such a fantastic book and while the movie looks good, it’s already clearly apparent from the first trailer that they took some very significant liberties with this adaptation. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing (just look at Blade Runner), it means that there are a lot of aspects from the book that will not be present in the movie and some of them (like the Biologist’s personality) are really significant to what makes the books so fantastic.

TL;DR: Read the book first, thank me later

I read the book first, and the book was amazing.

I hate to have to do this again but I need help paying my rent again. For those who may not know my troubles started with my unlawful release from my last job due to discrimination. You can read that here

I have had no luck in landing a job since then. I’ve been to so many interviews I can’t even remember them all but the second they hear about my physical capabilities (or lack thereof) I get the usual “we have found someone else for this position” call. I can’t lie to them because they’d find out I’m disabled sooner rather than later.

Naturally I really need to pay my bills and rent so I applied for SSI. They got back to me telling me my files etc on my RA are outdated so they’re going to consider me “not disabled”. I’m going to appeal this of course. I have an appointment set up to get retested for proof of my disease but that process is going to take a longass time.

During that time at least for now I’m going to need help, again sadly. I hate asking for help so much but I have literally no other choice until I can appeal my SSI case.

My donation links are here

Anything you can give helps. My rent is 1095 (I miss typed 1045 on one of my older posts). I can live without internet for a few weeks if I have to choose but my rent is my biggest focus. Seattle has a huge homeless problem because of people having the same problems I have and while I feel for them I don’t want to join them.

Thank you so much in advance ♥

I really don’t want to be homeless . any help is super appreciated :(

I have 4 days remaining ☹️

3 days and I’ve barely raised anything

I’m sorry but I’m desperate

two days, thank you for all you’ve done so far!

one day

I’m only a little more than half there :(

Hi guys I;m still looking for a job but I still need to pay my rent. I have my rheumatology appointment on friday so hopefully I’ll be able to appeal my SSI denial soon.

charlottedabookworm:

Nyx walks into the room.

He pauses, coming to a stop at attention as he spots the king, his shield, Cor, and a figure he recognises.

A figure he knows.

Staring at a face he’s long hoped to forget (forget like he’s forgotten so much else), that had haunted his nightmares for centuries, Nyx feels his mouth dry and his fists clench.

What the fuc-

“Sir Ulric,” King Regis says, interrupting his thoughts, and Nyx realises that he’s been talking for a while - something about a magical mishap and an ancestor who is suddenly alive again. “Until we determine if this is permanent, would you escort King Somnus to-”

“Nyx?” Says the ghost staring at him like he’s a phantom, interrupting King Regis.

Everyone turns to look at him.

And Nyx-

He turns on his heel.

Nyx walks out of the room.

[personal profile] charlottedabookworm

#in which Somnus is somehow dragged forwards through time because Magic
#and Regis et al have no idea how long this will last
#so they decide to assign Nyx to watch over him
#Nyx nopes out
#nope
#he refuses
#this is not happening
#even if it costs him his job

Oh, I *love* this!

It makes me think, though - you said that Somnus is dragged forward in time? You said ‘King’ Somnus - so for him to be titled as ‘King’, then it’s post-Betrayal/Coup, post Nyx’s Exceptionally Gruesome execution, when literally everyone thinks that Nyx is dead - including his one-time father.

So. Somnus is not expecting Nyx to walk through that door. He had every reason to think that Nyx was very permanently dead. He is probably very, very perturbed.

(This is Somnus’s - not his sins come back to haunt him, because he’s completely convinced that he did the Right Thing. But it is - disturbing, kicking up old memories and dirty secrets in a way that has not perturbed him since he started doctoring the history books and dictating what did and did not happen.)

Nyx is rather fervently hoping that this is not permanent, and comforts himself with the reminder that he literally watched his one-time father die. Snuck into the palace, just. Watched. (Sort of like in Time is Cruel ‘verse, only in this one - Nyx didn’t come as a form of revenge, he came to lay a nightmare to rest.) So, obviously, Somnus will snap back to the past - right? Right.

And then it hits Nyx. Ohfuck dad.

Because if and when Ardyn finds out about this, shit will hit the fan.

Nyx is willing to outright quit his job, because he is done with this. He is done with the Kinslayer, he’s suffered through literally centuries worth of nightmares, he underwent a lot of therapy - he is done letting Somnus rule his fears and his thoughts and his actions. He does not have to put up with this, he does not have to explain anything, and he does not owe anyone anything.

…I had the sudden mental image of the one thing Nyx says to his one-time father is something along the lines of “Legally, genetically, magically, and emotionally, you happen to be my uncle, not my father. Don’t presume on a nonexistent relationship, kinslayer.”

Still in the very early stages of planning!

What I have so far:

Everyone in Eos has at least one soulmate.  But not as we’d traditionally think of soulmates.  A soulmate in this ‘verse is someone who is going to play an important role in shaping your life—be that a parent, mentor, friend, lover, or even enemy.  Or some combination thereof.

So people often have more than one soulmate.  And the purpose of the soulmarks is somewhat unclear, at the beginning of the fic—there are tons of theories, but no one really knows.  But what is known is that the mark is the first words that will be spoken to you by your soulmate.

Which is where the time travel comes in.

Noctis entering the Crystal sends a sort of—cosmic ripple through space-time.  Which does two things: anyone who was alive within two generations prior to Noctis’ entrance has their consciousness sent back to the moment they met their first soulmate…and a paradox is created, of sorts.

Because Noctis was always meant to enter the Crystal, and thereby create the soulmarks, which were always intended to be a guide for the time traveling generations, but—the purpose of the time travel is to eliminate the need for Noctis to enter the Crystal.  A sort of partial reset, as it were.  But it’s also not a stable time loop, so something has to be corrected.

And, of course, none of the travelers know that.  Or what they’re doing back in time.  Or how they’re back in time.  But they know they want to change things.  And some of the things they want to change are at cross-purposes, or they may want to change the same thing but are going at it from completely different directions.

CHAOS

And then—weird things start happening.  People get caught in small time loops.  Objects become insubstantial.  Everyone has identical recurring dreams.  And it all gets worse the closer the timeline gets to the moment Noctis entered the Crystal.

And that is how the world learns that shit’s gotten real, fast.

So of course they turn to their leaders for answers.

Just one problem: they don’t have a clue either.

The only one with even an inkling of what could be wrong is a certain individual with a talent for time magic and a unique sense of fashion.

I’m speaking, of course, of Ardyn.

Of course, he’s not currently inclined to help anyone.  He was so close to his vengeance and final rest, and then he got sent back to the moment he met his first soulmate.  Who was this soulmate?  Somnus.

This Ardyn tried and failed to avert his fate—failed because the Scourge is so bound up in him now, it came back with him.  And so Ardyn had to reprise his roles as first Healer and then Accursed in order to get the timeline back to the birth of the one person who can kill him.

He is not happy.  He is tired.

He has Lucians knocking on his door, why.

Oh, the Chosen King mentioned he can do things with time, did he?  You want him to consult on this time travel phenomenon?

Why should he?

And thus ensues a comedy of sorts as the leaders of the world try to convince one stubborn, exhausted, cranky immortal to help them save the world.

I’m calling it “This Is Fine”.

One thing I unironically love about the recently expanded Good Omens fandom is the increased attention on Crowley and Azirphale’s relationship with Warlock.

A great deal of the fandom focuses on Adam and his relationship with his celestial ‘godparents’. And that’s great! There’s some gorgeous work out there about the interactions between the three of them.

But I’d sometimes think about the Serpent of Eden, the Watcher of the Eastern Gate, and how they spent literal years pretty much raises this other kid. This too-human kid, singing him lullabies about crushing the nations of the earth beneath his feet and teaching him reverence and respect for all other beings. And I’d think: regardless of whether or not he was the antichrist, he was their charge. Didn’t that mean - something?

Did they just. Forget him? Post-Event, there’s really not that much mention/consideration of a kid who was the focus of their entire world, more or less, for years upon years.  Did they deliberately focus on seeing him as the job and not as a child, as their charge?

(And I get how Warlock was kind of glossed over, I mean, the world was literally ending in the book and all the characters had to focus on the Apocalypse-That-Wasn’t and everything, but still - )

What I’m trying to say is. It’s really, really great to see other people considering, and engaging with, Warlock. And writing - fics and meta about Crowley and Aziraphale and Warlock. It’s. Really really nice to see.

entitledrichpeople:

Homeless people are human beings with immense value.  They are members of our families, communities, neighborhoods, cities, and, for a number of people reading this, they are themselves (or have been).

The fact that homeless people do not have housing is a wrong done against them, not a sign they did something wrong.  To then try and ban them from public spaces and existing in public (including doing things we all have to do, like sleep or eat), is yet another grievous wrong.

An attack on homeless people is not “protecting the community”, it is an attack on the community.  Homeless people aren’t my enemy, those who would ban them from things like sleeping in public are my enemy.

you know what i don’t see enough of? circus kid dick grayson critiquing the joker because he’s a bad clown. not like, bad, and also a clown. but bad at being a clown. i want to see dick grayson taking the existence of this horrible clown very personally as a matter of professional pride. he has known clowns, and you, sir, are no clown. the joker is an insult to the legacy of emmett kelly and this shall not stand.

[profile] poodlemonkeyishere replied:

Does the Joker have an egg in the official clown headquarters?

the clown egg registry

i forgot about the clown egg registry

do you think they refuse because he’s not a real clown

like someone inquires about the joker and so they put out a press release to state that not only is he not registered with clowns international, they will not be accepting applications from the fucking joker, because he’s not even a clown and he doesn’t even wear makeup, you don’t get to register your regular-ass non-clown face

batman has to theoretically protect the fucking clown egg registry from the joker throwing a tantrum, but quite frankly he doesn’t have to do much because it’s the joker versus an army of real actual clowns defending the history of their noble profession

To think that I bought a copy of The Killing Joke when I could’ve held out for the *finest* Joker storyline.

neil-gaiman:

flying-coffeebean:

In 2007, I met Neil Gaiman during one of his book signing tours in Forbidden Planet, London. I managed to get there early enough that I was only about 30th in the queue, which was fortunate as it was a typical, drizzly British day.

I was a little nervous. I’d loved Gaiman’s work for a long time, and had dithered over which books I wanted him to sign as the limit was two. Eventually, I settled on Stardust and Fragile Things - as it was the Fragile Things tour (if I remember correctly), and Stardust had a special place in my heart.

As soon as I stepped inside, I realised there was absolutely no reason to be nervous. There was this chilled out, completely at ease guy with a leather jacket and curly hair. He smiled at his fans. He actually talked to them, and was actually interested in what they had to say, not wanting to hurry them along. I took a (very bad) picture while he signed someone else’s book.

Then came my turn, and my nerves completely vanished. He asked for my name, and I spelled it for him as Richelle is quite unusual.

“That’s a really cool name,” he said, “Where did your parents get that from?” I explained it was my aunt’s middle name. “What does it mean?” He asked. I told him I didnt know, but that it was the French feminine of Richard, after my great grandad.

“Ah, that makes sense, with the Ri…”

He signed both books, and drew me some lovely little doodles. (“I drew a cracked heart for you.”)

(I don’t have a good enough memory to remember this so clearly by the way, but I blogged about it immediately when I left the shop, and I’ve been able to refer back to it)

What a lovely man, I thought.

A few months later, I went to a Terry Pratchett book signing during his tour for Making Money. Again in Forbidden Planet, there was a two book limit, and as I’d already promised a friend in the USA a signed copy of Making Money, that meant I had one book for myself. Then I remembered Good Omens, and kicked myself for not thinking of bringing it to the Gaiman tour a few months before. Oh well, I thought, there’s always next time.

The first thing I saw of Terry was his hat. Then I noticed his laugh, which was very infectious. He signed Making Money, dedicated to my friend, and then he spied my copy of Good Omens. “Ah, this old thing.” He grinned and signed away. I saw the dedication and laughed, and stepped away, feeling like he knew something I didn’t.

That’s that, I thought, I’ll wait for another Gaiman signing.

I had to wait a little while, as it turns out, until his signing for The Ocean at the End of the Lane in Ely cathedral in 2013. This time, I wasn’t so lucky. My friend and I drove from London to Cambridge, and there was an accident on the way. By the time we got there, there were hundreds upon hundreds of people in front of us.

This signing also included a talk, and Gaiman spoke about his childhood, his experiences as an author and answered lots of questions. He also read a passage of his book, Fortunately, the Milk, and the audience were in hysterics. Seriously, no matter how old you are, you’ll love that book.

We queued up to sign in the order we arrived, and we queued for a long time. The girl standing in front of my friend and I was obviously very excited, and she struck up conversation with us. She told us she was heavily dyslexic, but she’d read every single Neil Gaiman book. She enjoyed his work so much, that even though reading was difficult for her, she devoured his books and they made her love to read.

When it came to our turn, Neil had been signing for hours, it was late. He must have been tired. But he was still genial and pleasant to the people in front of us. The girl in front of us stepped up, and she was so overwhelmed, she couldn’t speak properly as he signed her books. She was almost panicking, but she still managed to tell him about her dyslexia and despite it, her love of his books. Neil put down his pen, and spoke softly, kindly. “Would you like a hug?” She nodded, and laughed and cried and hugged him so tightly.

When it came to my turn, I said he was very kind, and he smiled. He quickly signed my copy of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and then spied the next book I’d set on the table, open to the page where Terry had signed. His smile widened. “Ah,” he said, dipping his pen in his ink, “I almost never get to finish this joke any more, as Terry no longer does signings.”

He drew an asterisk next to where Terry had signed, drew an arrow to the bottom, and then finished the joke.

[profile] neil_gaiman, thank you. Thank you for bringing my favourite ever book to the screen, and thank you for dedicating it to Terry.

You are so welcome. It makes me sad to think there won’t be any new books signed by both of us.
